MAXIMIZING YOUR POTENTIALS AS A SINGLE BELIEVER by Joash Maji

Without a doubt, it is God’s intention that his children do not only live right but also live fulfilled lives. We clearly see in scriptures where believers are asked to live out their lives in total fulfillment. Single and young believers are not left out of God’s plan to fulfill life.

1 Timothy 4:12 profoundly tells young believers never to allow anyone to despise their youth but to be an example to all. We cannot talk about fulfilling life without deep consideration of maximizing potentials because maximizing innate potentials are what it takes for an individual to live a fulfilled life. There are several ways through which a young believer can maximize his or her potentials and we will consider them one after the other.

  • Study and training: the scripture in 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) prescribes study as an essential activity for anyone who should be anyone taking up duties in the church. This also relates to maximizing potentials. Potentials or talents in their basic forms are yet raw and has less mastery. It will take study and training to give your potentials the finishing touch for a wider impact.
  • Service and practice: potentials are just like potential energy; you can possess them yet remain unproductive because you do not put them to work. When you engage in certain service or duties in a local assembly or any organization which gives you the opportunity to exercise your potential, your potentials are sharpened due to frequent use. Let’s take for instance, a young believer who has public speaking potentials taking up duties in the press or publication department of his local assembly or in any organization will ultimately maximize his public speaking skills due to frequency of use.
  • Character development: the most gifted man on earth may not go far in life or may not end well if he suffers from character deficiency. Character is built through living on the word of God as one’s reference for life. The scripture is replete with several verses admonishing believers to be resolute on their faith and beliefs in the face of challenge and compromise. A popular maxim goes thus “skill, talent and potential may take you to the top but your character will keep you there.” As a single believer, one way for your light to shine so brightly or for your potentials to be maximized to the fullest is to have great character strength. Simply put, living a life that replicates the traits Jesus is known for. It takes character to be courageous enough to show up strongly with your potentials even when every odd is against you so much so as it takes character to make decisions intended to influence positive change in your environment.
